Women who speak out too much, too loud are labelled as attention seeking, if they happen to have an occasional foot in the mouth situation, they are labelled as feather-headed and should they also happen to be lookers, they will be tagged as bimbos. The western world has done it for long - the blonde jokes are proof enough that women who are in the public eye don't fare too well.
Closer at home, Sonam and Alia have drawn flak from all quarters about dumb statements they have made. When was the last time a man's words were scrutinized like that? Well, except for Rahul Gandhi, who is a politician and deserves such close scrutiny.. no other men, especially none in the show business, have faced such criticism over stray comments or statements of theirs.
The fact is that it is so much more easier to ride on the back of a dumb blonde joke than a joke made on a muscular dimwit. The internet has ridden high and low with the Alia Bhatt KwK fiasco and Sonam Kapoor's comments on the same show.
The controversy which erupted when India lost its matches while Anushka was touring with Virat Kohli was in bad taste. Considering that this should be a private matter and if some player wishes to take along his/her spouse/parter he should be free to do without facing immense backlash after a loss. That being said, the implication that taking along women can be distracting for the players, is in itself the height of chauvinism.
But aren't we glad that our women are hitting back with vengeance? Anushka took all the hullabaloo in her stride and once BF, Virat had gotten his mojo back, everybody just started tweeting about how the couple looked cute on their foreign trips.
In a similar fashion, Sonam Kapoor has made it clear that she is not afraid of saying the wrong things and even if this male dominated society chooses to pinpoint all her errors she will not be afraid of them. Alia hit back squarely with the hilarious video she made with AIB on YouTube.
The female Indian celeb is finally coming of age. Be it Deepika hitting back during the cleavage controversy or Anushka being very open about her relationship with Virat Kohli in spite of all the chauvinistic crap she had to deal with.
